Lake Havasu City Injuries Get The Ice Fast!

If your Lake Havasu City kids are active on the field, the court, or in your own backyard, chances are you have dealt with many bumps, bruises, and sprains. Prompt medical care can make all the difference when it comes to how quickly an injury heals.

Despite medical advancements, when it comes to a sprain, strain, break, or bruise, the best way to reduce pain and swelling is the same as when you were a kid: apply ice.

For the best DIY ice bag, fill a zip-top bag with ice cubes or crushed ice and a little water. The liquid will help the bag conform to the body and distribute the cold evenly. You can also use the frozen peas trick, which does essentially the same thing.

Don’t apply the bag to bare skin, however. This could cause frostbite or even a burn. Wrap the pack in a thin towel or article of clothing.

Don’t take the ice off too soon. Removing it after just a few minutes, when the skin is cold to the touch, won’t have a lasting effect. Leave ice on the injury until the area goes numb, but not more than 20 minutes. Repeat this once an hour for up to four hours.

Remember to get the ice on as soon as possible. Preventing and reducing inflammation speeds up the healing process. The sooner you get ice on it, the sooner your Lake Havasu City child will be back in action.

1) The Tesla Model S four-door electric sedan. (I’ve never heard of this car but the makers claim it will go ’300 zero-emission miles on one charge.’1 That’s a lot of trips to your closest Vidal grocery store with no adverse environmental impact!)
2) BMW Five Series. (This isn’t your ordinary Vidal kid hauler but it sure is pretty.)
3) Chevrolet Cruze. (This small sedan has the most budget-friendly MSRP of $16,275.)

As Lake Havasu City parents, our children’s’ health and safety should be our top priority. When it comes time to buy a new family car in Vidal, remember to check the safety ratings.

Many parents in Lake Havasu are concerned about the amount of time their kids spend in front of a screen, either playing games or watching TV. We want to encourage our children to be physically active and thereby healthier.

There are several things Topock parents can do to increase their kids level of physical activity. Topock pediatricians stress the importance of being a role model for your kids. Topock children who see their parents participating in activities are more likely to be active themselves.

When children see their mom or dad doing yoga in the living room or holding a plank position and doing push ups they can’t resist trying it. By turning exercising into a game, you can keep your child interested.

Positive and active parenting is an exciting opportunity to raise healthy and fit kids in Topock. I am hoping that today’s kids in Topock will be healthier than our generation.

Children, with their smaller body weights and higher turnover of electrolytes and water, are very susceptible to dehydration. Most Lake Havasu parents know to look for the signs of dehydration when their children have a stomach sickness, but even healthy kids are at risk for dehydration, especially when they are outside on warm, sunny days. The risk is particularly high for kids who play outdoor sports in Parker Dam, Vidal, and Topock.

Since dehydration is such an important issue in children’s health, be sure to insist on regular fluid intake before and during all physical activity. Opt for lightweight, loose, and light-colored clothing that covers as much skin as possible. Also, stay in close communication with coaches and make sure they are aware of dehydration risk.

Children who don’t exercise much, are obese, or who are sick, have an increased risk of dehydration. It’s important to allow all kids to acclimate to the heat when the temperature goes up in Lake Havasu. Let them take it easy for the first few practice sessions.

It’s also important to help your kids recognize the symptoms of dehydration:

Thirst
Dry mouth
Headache
Dizziness
Cramps
Excessive fatigue

Every year as winter approaches, many Parker Dam parents wonder if they should get their kids a flu shot.

Everyone gets the flu, right? Is it that big of a deal?

In most cases, the flu is an inconvenience, but not detrimental beyond missing a few days of school. However, Parker Dam pediatricians caution that it is extremely important for high risk kids to get a flu shot. Ditto if your child is in regular contact with a high risk person.

What qualifies a child as high risk? Parker Dam experts say that chronic medical conditions such as diabetes or asthma puts a child at greater risk because the flu can contribute to serious complications. Many Parker Dam doctors also recommend flu shots for all children under five years old. Parker Dam experts advise getting your child’s flu vaccination as early as possible, in August or September or as soon as it is available, to protect them through the entire season which generally lasts from October to April.

Remember that two shots are required for children under the age of eight, given four weeks apart, for full protection your first year of getting vaccinated. Just one shot per year is needed after that.

Flumist is a nasal spray vaccine that can be given to healthy children ages two and up, an option that can be more child friendly. Side effects from either method of vaccination may include runny nose, muscle aches, vomiting, or low grade fever. The new flu vaccines offer protection from both H1N1 and the seasonal flu.

Hello! Welcome to the Lake Havasu children’s health blog. I am Xocai Chocolate Advocate JJ Birden. At this site, I publish information on nutrition and health issues that affect Lake Havasu children and families. My goal is to improve the state of children’s health in the Lake Havasu City area.

Despite decades of increased awareness in Lake Havasu City about the dangers of a distorted body image and extreme dieting, eating disorders are still a serious problem.

A recent American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) study revealed disturbing facts about eating disorders among children.1 According to the report, 0.5 percent of teenage girls in the country are estimated to have anorexia. The bulimia rate among adolescent girls is estimated at more than double that at 1 to 2 percent. Though anorexia and bulimia are usually thought of as a problem for adolescents, Lake Havasu parents should be aware that even young Lake Havasu City children are at risk, as well as males, though the rates are lower.

Arizona pediatricians can help Lake Havasu parents with children affected by an eating disorder. The AAP recommends a combination approach for the treatment of eating disorders in children. Treatment plans usually include nutritional guidance and psychiatric counseling along with the appropriate medical care.
